ERNEST LYONS BRIDGE
Stuart, Florida
The Ernest Lyons Bridge carries A1A over the Indian River Intracoastal Waterway in Stuart, Florida, providing 65’ of vertical clearance. The new bridge replaced three low-level bridges, one with a bascule span. The new precast segmental concrete box girder structure provides for two 12′ lanes of traffic. PCL Civil Constructors was awarded the design-build project in 2003 at a bid price of $46 million. The 4,661′ long precast segmental bridge consists of 152′ long spans. The box girder is 61′ wide and was erected span-by-span using a self-launching erection girder specifically designed for this project. Segments were delivered along the completed portion of the bridge and placed on the erection girder using a specially designed segment lifter located at the end of the spans.
